Fear no child
is a website dedicated to advocating and supporting caregivers of children with mental illness

This site is committed to educating caregivers' and supporting the everyday struggles that we go through when caring for a child who is "mentally different".

Everyday, people just like you and us are trying to raise a child (or children) that have special requirements or needs. They don't make a guidebook for raising "normal" children, and they sure as heck don't write one for people like us! Most people may not understand. WE DO!!!

For 18 years, we have committed ourselves to understanding children of difference. We have fought to include our children in the everyday activities that "normal" children enjoy. We have had our kids in scouts, soccer even football. It takes a lot of work to raise special kids. But this extra work will pay off. The benefits of inclusion in sports and extra activities is indescribable! Our special kids can feel important! They can feel the success that every other kid experiences when they are involved in these things. In short, we have worked diligently to keep our kids lives as "normal" as possible in a world that simply doesn't understand.

We have been cub scout leaders, coaches and room parents. We did this in order to allow our kids to participate in activities while acting as "one on ones" when needed. We were able to watch from a slight distance to ensure that they were successful, and intervened only when needed. Its not easy, but it was great to see them succeed!!!

As our children have gotten somewhat older, we have become passionate about bringing mental illness and mental differences out into the open. We feel that the more we talk about mental illness in children, the less scary it will be for other people.

There are some things that you may want to learn more about. Specific behaviors that you see in your child. What questions you might want to ask your childs' doctor or teacher, what services you think your child needs. We may be able to answer some of your questions, we may be able to point you in the direction that you need to go in.

So welcome to our site!

And in case you are wondering "why did they name the site Fear No Child?" William suggested it because far too many people fear our children because they do not understand them. Fear can come out in many ways, as we have learned. It sometimes looks like avoidance, sometimes it takes the form of sarcasm or rudeness and sometimes in false empathy.

We want everyone to know that they need to embrace the difference, not fear it!
